In July 1954, the Geneva Conference decided on the Ben Hai River/the 17th Parallel as the temporary dividing line between North and South, with a five kilometre buffer on either side as a demilitarised zone until elections could take place.

There’s an enormous monument memorialising how families became separated, a museum of mostly black and white photos, replicas of the watchtowers and loud speakers used to blast propaganda at the other side, the house where the UN Observation Committee worked from 1954 to 1965 and a footbridge. The bombing of North Vietnam, called Operation Rolling Thunder, was initiated and by the end of 1965 184,300 troops were on the ground with 200,000 more scheduled to arrive in the future.
They became a legend during the Vietnam war because they stood still after tremendous attacks of the American army, and continually renovated to deliver weapons and supplies to the Vietnamese Communist army. Therefore, it is recommended to visit DMZ in Vietnam in the early dry season (April or May) to enjoy the most pleasant period of the year, avoid the heat, the rain and the crowd of domestic visitors. Just 20 kilometres from the Lao border and situated on a plateau, remote and isolated Khe Sanh Marine Base is famous (and infamous) for the Battle of Khe Sanh, a devastating siege by the North Vietnamese Army that lasted for 77 days, one of the longest and deadliest of the war.
After the war, as many of the remains as possible were retrieved and interred. The boundary between North Vietnam (officially the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam) and South Vietnam (officially the State and later the Republic of Vietnam) was established as the Ben Hai River.

It can be done as a full day trip from Hue, but visiting Hamburger Hill requires a guide and a permit. The Ho Chi Minh Trail (now highway QL14) intersects Highway 9 on the other side of the Dakrong Bridge. The tunnel largely (but not quite) remains as it was.
The North pounded it with artillery, rocket and mortar rounds and it was the site of several intense and bloody battles that turned the US media and public against the war. Though this place is not really large, it takes about 2 days or at least a long day to wander around and explore all important historical sites. It is not easy to find this former battleground without a local guide as now, instead of a dead point with various bombs, it is covered by waist-high elephant grass, thick bamboo forest and triple-canopy jungle. The East-West corridor follows along the demilitarized zone. Because of their rules of engagement, the Americans could not cross the Ben Hai River and violate the northern half of the DMZ.
The east-west corridor of Route 9 takes you along the fire line of US Marine bases that saw intense bombardment, as well as across the famed Ho Chi Minh Trail. Such areas as Khe Sanh, Camp Carroll, and the Rockpile — a hill in the middle of the Cam Lo valley where NVA movements could be observed by U.S. Marines — are forever etched into the minds of the soldiers who fought there and survived.
