Whenever I play this for someone they are bowled over. And for a Van album, it ranks right there with his classics. This album far surpasses any other live album by anyone that I've ever listened too.
Paul Simon's 1991 Concert in Central Park being another example of how great songs handled by top shelf musicians in a live setting can create something really special and in my opinion better than the original recordings. A jazzy Van for sure; don’t expect acoustic ballads like Veeden Fleece! Live albums to me are the true test of musician. You can almost hear the jaws hitting the floor as Van ignites the audience with one amazing song after another. The recording is good, Van is in great voice and has some amazing people on stage with him including the sax player Candy Dufler and Georgie Fame on organ/keyboard, there are some wonderful solos. This 2 disc set has two performances from Van undertaken a week apart in the Bay Area, more than 20 years after Van lived in Marin and was a fixture at the Fillmore. "Too Late" showcases Van's almost savant mastery of Rhythm and Blues at a time when other rock artists were opting to sloppily rework blues riffs with electronic effects or worse, trying to follow the fads like disco or punk. He is generous also with his superb cast of musicians, giving them room to breathe and letting them coalesce around him, anchored by guitarist Ronnie Johnson and organist Georgie Fame. This is one great live album.

There are a few notable successes - by James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Solomon Burke, the Band, the Flying Burrito Bros, Talking Heads - but Van Morrison is probably the first artist to issue two classic live albums.
