"Stay With Me" has never sounded better, and there is a very exciting "All You Have to Do is Wait" by way of David Schoffield on this version as well. Even if it’s not a perfect show, the presentation is immaculate.

The interplay between the two stories gives Gelbart rich scope for a string of pastiche Chandlerisms: “only the floor,” says Stone, encountering a seductive blonde, “kept her legs from going on for ever.” The framework also licenses Gelbart to get sweet revenge on an archetypal writer-baiting Hollywood producer, who at one point declares, in a phrase worthy of Samuel Goldwyn, “It’s an unwritten law in letters 23 feet high.”, The script ripples with wit and there is good Pirandellian fun to be had out of the growing interaction between Stine and his fictional alter ego. It has one of the wittiest books ever written, boasts an effervescent score by Cy Coleman and here gets as slick and svelte a production by Josie Rourke as you could wish. Arguably Cy Coleman's strongest score, City of Angels is also one of the most intelligent musicals ever put together, with some exceptionally clever lyrics courtesy of David Zippel, and a killer plot (which is conveyed surprisingly well through this highlights recording). A very good presentation of the show as a whole. 67 reviews, Larry Gelbart’s phenomenally clever, split-level play is packed with jokes. I saw a local college production of this show and it made me appreciate this recording even more. But, although Coleman’s score has the jazzy feel of 1940s film noir, the songs seem to adorn the action rather than spring organically from it (a striking exception is You Can Always Count On Me, buoyantly delivered by Rebecca Trehearn). 191 reviews,

Dazzling as Gelbart’s book is, you also feel that David Zippel’s lyrics are struggling to compete, leading to none-too-graceful rhymes such as “If you’re not celibate, we could raise hell a bit.”. It sounds as if the actresses singing "What You Don't Know About Women," while still giving a very good performance, are afraid of letting loose and really flying at the end of the song. 25 helpful votes, 6",
