As the star of track and screen Phar Lap was an accessible hero. The Colt from TimaruHe was foaled at Seadown Stud, near Timaru, New Zealand, from a pairing of the English sire Night Raid and local mare Entreaty, being born on 4 October 1926. Although he was unimpressed when he first saw it, Davis soon grew fond of the horse, and the album in this collection speaks to the relationship of the owner and the horse. It took 18 months before Phar Lap won his first race, but by the time the lease expired in February 1931, Davis's share of the winnings totalled £15,615 from 36 starts - almost a hundred fold return on his initial outlay. As an even priced favourite he narrowly lost the 1929 Melbourne Cup, running third behind Nightmarch, another son of Night Raid - a loss put down to inexperience on the part of both horse and rider with his regular jockey Jimmy Pike being changed at short notice. Whereas the Australian public ran 'hot and cold' with their feelings for Telford, their regard for Davis edged closer to plain dislike.
