Two shallow horseshoe balconies, known as the Grand Circle and Upper Circle, with three small boxes at each side of the Grand Circle, complete the auditorium. Rather than operate the two theatres (and the Theatre Royal, also under Howard & Wyndham’s control at the time) in competition, The Lyceum focused on drama, straight plays, and opera; the Theatre Royal on Scottish music hall; and the King’s on lavish musicals, pantomime, and touring productions. It was at this time that workers “rediscovered” the Ballard mural of Apollo and the Muses above the proscenium, which had become hidden and forgotten under layers of tobacco smoke. The Howard Bar is named for John Howard, who in partnership with Frederick Wyndham was one of the two original owner-operators of the theatre. The Wyndham Bar is located at Grand Circle (first balcony) level and is accessed via stairs from the Inner Lobby (the original main lobby).
