In 1640 Marguerite Bourgeoys joined a noncloistered congregation of teachers attached to a Troyes convent directed by the sister of Governor Maisonneuve of Ville-Marie (Montréal). St. Marguerite Bourgeoys was born in Troyes, France in 1620, and died in Montreal in 1700. At the age of twenty, she had a conversion experience during a religious procession that profoundly influenced her future mission and focused her values. On her second trip Bourgeoys obtained permission from Louis XIV to establish a group of laywomen, without vows and without cloister obligations, dedicated to educational work and subject to the local bishop. ^ Change is from redistributed results. In 1658 she became Montreal's first schoolmistress when she converted an abandoned stable into an elementary school. His successor, Bishop Saint-Vallier, also denied permission but relented in 1698, two years before the founder's death. In 1653, Paul de Maisonneuve, founder of Montreal, passed through Troyes and invited St. Marguerite to join him in Ville Marie as a lay teacher, to instruct the children of the colonists and of the Native Americans. St. Marguerite became the official guardian to the “filles du roi”, young orphan girls sent by the monarch to establish new families.
